Hated by many, loved by few - well, the reactions towards GEZUVOR VW Club member Manuel's latest creation weren't as bad as expected. In fact, even at Bad Camberg - THE mekka of the vintage VW enthusiast - it caused many smiles among the participants and visitors. The whole project started with a dream: Manuel and I had been sitting in our favourite pub at Fribourg as we talked VWs (as usual). We always used to imagine our future projects at the parking lot in front of the pub. One day the subject came to WW2 Volkswagens like a Schwimmwagen or a Kübelwagen. How cool would it be to slam such a vehicle, to fit some cal look wheels and to install a hot engine? At the same moment, Manuel remembered of an original type 82 Kübelwagen, that's been sitting for decades in a corner of the VW dealership he used to work at. It was too good to be true! Just a few days later he gave a phonecall to that dealership and after some visits and many negociations Manuel managed to become the new owner of this '44 Kübelwagen. The condition wasn't that bad but the bodyshell was covered with dents and five layers of old paint. It still sat on its original chassis with the rear reduction boxes and 16" wheels. Manuel - who slowly turned into General James Dubiosi - replaced it with a '62 NOS chassis he got from a technical school. After that he quickly started with the performance mods. The chassis was lowered and got a Hurst line-lock. The engine is a 1600 type 1 with ported and polished 040 heads (39 x 35,5 valves), 40IDF Webers and a Bugpack header with muffler. When it came to wheels, Manuel decided for a set of NOS 5-lug Sprintstars. Now you're probably wondering about the rear wheels - let's call them the JD Race Rims. Normally they're painted silver but detailed in black and polished they look awesome, don't they? As you're reading this, General Dubiosi's Cal Kübel found a new home outside of Switzerland. We'll see where it's gonna turn up in the future...
