Gero Canters from the south of Germany is the owner of this stunning Cal Look influenced Sedan. He bought the pearl-white 1962 export model with only 89'000 kms on the clock from its original owner. From '89 to '98, he used it as his daily driver - note that this car is still unrestored. Gero, a member of the performance oriented Groundspeed Pilots VW Association, started in 1998 to build this neat Old School looker. The stock front beam was lowered, got a set of CSP disc brakes and a 19mm anti-roll bar. The rear end retained its stock height, while red Koni shocks at all four corners help to improve handling. Wheels are Empi Sprintstars (4.5" front, 5.5" rear) with the classic tire combination of 145-15 respectively 205/70-15 Firestones.
Now let's get to the most important point of every Cal Look car, the engine and tranny combination. The 1776 was built by club buddy Mike from a 69mm crank with balanced rods and 90.5mm Mahle cylinders/pistons. The cam is an Engle W110 with straight cuts, and we also find 1:1.25 Autocraft ratio rockers and Scat pushrods. The 040 heads were ported and polished but retained their stock valves, the valve covers are bolt-on "Claude Buggies". A set of Weber 40IDF carbs with K&N filters is fitted to the manifolds. The lightened flywheel with 8 dowels gives the torque to a 200mm LUK clutch, while a Gene Berg starter was installed to keep up with the raised compression ratio. In the beginning, Gero installed a Turbo Muffler which he recently replaced by this more effective Ahnendorp Street Sport exhaust in stainless steel. An additional 1.5l oil sump with full flow and an external oil cooler prevent the engine from overheating. The engine was dynoed at 114bhp @ 5500rpm and 163Nm torque @ 4260rpm. The stock transmission got a Rhino trans mount and a strap. Let's have a quick look at the beautiful interior which is equipped with a upholstered Simca bucket seat, VDO tach and gauges, a GB shifter, an ATI "Indianapolis" steering wheel and last but not least a Wiechers rollbar.
