Being involved with the VW Scene for many years and having owned various aircooled VWs, Andreas "Adde" Augenstein finally had been caught by the drag racing virus. Things got serious when he came across a coral red '63 standard beetle which was up for sale with a set of BRMs. He bought the restored car and sold the wheels. Now he had the perfect car to start with and all he needed was the most important thing: an appropriate engine. Just when Adde had faced that fact, he heard that the famous german drag racer Ralf Schellhorn had decided to sell the former engine of his race car. Of course, Adde became the second owner of that type 1 engine. Built with a 82mm crank and 90.5mm cylinders, the heads with 44 x 37.5 valves have been heavily reworked by Udo Becker. CR is set at about 10:1 while the engine is fed by a pair of 48 IDAs on Gene Berg manifolds. Unfortunately, Adde couldn't point out what type of cam and lifters had been used. Anyway, the engine with a 1 5/8" GB header and a homebrewed Krautspeed muffler develops serious horsepower which will be proven at an upcoming dyno day. His best ET in 2003 was a respectable 14.55 @ 92,78 mph during the first DAS Drag Day at Bitburg. During the winter Adde installed a close ratio gearbox with 4.125 r&p, ZF limited slip diff, a 1.46 3rd and a 1.12 4th gear. With this combination he hopes to improve his times in 2004. Just for the look Adde fitted a set of sprintstars and the body received some pinstriping. The black Schwarzwald Performance t-bars and the lowered front end complete the traditional cal look treatment. You can be sure to meet Adde and his awesome Sauerkraut Racer at many european drag strips this year. And it definitely isn't a trick - it's just Krautspeed!
